Infographicporn

When I was in school studying advertising one of my profs said to me, “if you really want a challenge in advertising make an award winning ad for a toilet cleaner.” My passion shifted from advertising to graphic design and I find myself thinking, if you want to challenge yourself as a graphic designer make award winning information graphics.

I have spent some time going through a variety of sources to bring you my top 25 information graphics porn list! I draw an immense amount of inspiration from this form of design, it is a perfect example of creative “out of the box” thinking, otherwise (but not always) boring statistics wrapped up in solid concepts, flawless execution and served as brilliant eye candy.

[Note: I am very interested in expanding my experience with information graphics. Got stats? Hit me up if you have something you would like to collaborate on]

While aesthetically fulfilling, I think it’s important for an infographics designer to not lose sight of their audience. I find that a lot of these images make it very difficult to derive useful meaning from the data.

When presenting to execs, it’s not about listing data points, the difficulty is in driving home the point of a chart or data set.. the main purpose is not only to amuse/entertain, but to get your message across (rather than presenting a bunch of discrete facts or data points)..

Infographics that can do this AND be gorgeous to look at are what truly will inspire us to throw out powerpoint.
