I hit up the MOCCA during the week to check out their offerings for CONTACT09. Next to the restrooms was a section blocked off with black velvet curtains where bright flashes of light were emitting, I made my way into the dark room and was greeted by three flashes of light straight to the face. My vision came back and I was surrounded by life sized images of women, men and children disheveled and covered in blood.
The walls were painted with photo fluorescent paint and three over hung, motorized projectors temporarily burned 45 different images of people fleeing chaos and conflict onto the walls. The projectors spun around and flashed like press at a gala, exposed images slowly faded out while fresh exposures layered over top, creating an incredibly eerie sensation of sharing the moment with the ghostly images. I have seen many photo installations showing provocative war images, but never have I felt so immersed and affected by the experience.
Mat Collishaw’s immersive multi-media installation Deliverance (2008), is at the MOCCA as part of their exhibit – STILL REVOLUTION: SUSPENDED IN TIME running from May 1st – June 14th, I highly recommend it!
